As a first-generation student from a low-income Hispanic background, pursuing a secondary education was never guaranteed. It is a privilege that I have continuously worked for, and not many in my position have been granted. Receiving the Pamela Silva Conde First Generation Scholarship has made a world’s difference in my future.
Throughout my education, I understood the cost of a college degree would need to be funded independently. Despite my financial adversities, I took on that challenge. The contributions by the Pamela Silva Conde Scholarship to aid first-generation students has made receiving an education less of a challenge and more of a possibility for students like me. I have been able to attend Florida International University and pursue a career in journalism to help educate the masses, in hopes of one day serving as a voice for Hispanic communities in the United States.
As a successful journalist and an FIU alumna, Pamela Silva Conde is a role model to FIU Honors College and School of Communication and Journalism students. Entering the field of journalism is no easy feat, however, her work in the field has opened many doors for journalists, and moreover, has created opportunities for Hispanics across America. Being chosen as a Pamela Silva Conde Scholar has allowed me the privilege of earning an education, networking with top journalists in the field, and proven to me that my time at FIU is only the beginning.
The contributions by the Pamela Silva Conde Scholarship to aid first-generation students continues to be one of the most impactful programs at FIU. She is a positive figure for students both nationally and within our own university. It is an honor to consider myself a #PSCScholar!
Thank you!
