Family Foundation Fuels Innovation
For more than a decade, FIU researchers, together with medical experts at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Brain Institute®, have worked diligently to advance medical imaging and improve the diagnosis of children with epilepsy. Leading that research team as part of FIU’s neuro-engineering program is Dr. Malek Adjouadi, associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and director of the Center for Advanced Technology and Education.
Thanks to significant contributions from the Ware Foundation, the neuro-engineering program at FIU continues to succeed as Adjouadi and his team are making breakthroughs in neuroscience that have been benefiting patients and their families across South Florida and beyond.
“This partnership has bridged neuroscience and engineering to create new knowledge of brain development and continues offering hope for devastating illnesses of the nervous system,” said Adjouadi, who expressed his deep appreciation for the Ware Foundation.
The Ware Foundation – established in 1949 by Miami businessman and philanthropist John Ware to improve the lives of people in need, and to provide grants that would positively impact the community – has a long history of donations to FIU. Over nearly 30 years, the foundation has made contributions totaling nearly $3 million.
During this time, the family foundation has provided seed funding for several innovative projects at FIU, including Adjouadi’s research, a professorship in neuroscience with the College of Engineering & Computing, and an integrated math and science curriculum for children ages 3 to 5 with the College of Education. Most recently, the foundation organized a $50,000 grant to support a collaboration between the College of Architecture + The Arts and the Bakehouse Art Complex in the creation of a Master of Fine Arts studio lab. “The Ware Foundation’s interest in funding innovative and community-centered ideas makes it a natural partner for FIU,” said the foundation’s president, Morgan Ware Soumah.
“FIU is willing to explore new approaches to solving problems, whether it is in the area of research, professional development, etc.,” she said. “This allows them to be on the cutting edge of education. There is also a passion for their work that is evident amongst the faculty and staff at FIU, which is inspiring.” For Adjouadi and his team, the Ware Foundation’s investment in FIU has already made a tremendous impact.
“We are extremely grateful for the continued support of the Ware Foundation,” Adjouadi said. “We look forward to continue transforming what is possible with the Ware Foundation, building on past success and advancing our mutual commitment to 21st century innovation.”
