FIU remains ranked among the top 25 public universities in the world for the number of U.S. utility patents produced. FIU holds 61 patents, spanning the fields of renewable energy, medicine, computer science, engineering, and more. FIU ranked No. 20 among public universities and No. 40 among all universities in the world.
In FY19-20, FIU had 44 top-50 rankings among public universities from U.S. News & World Report. These included No. 10 for Top Performers for Social Mobility (among all universities), No. 30 for Most Innovative Public Schools, and No. 2 for Best Undergraduate International Business Programs (among all universities). Graduate programs in four colleges and schools are ranked among the top 50.
FIU was selected by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities to classify as a community-engaged university in 2020. The classification recognizes institutions that demonstrate a distinctive institutional focus on engagement in local, regional, national, and global communities. FIU was first designated as an engaged university in 2010.
FIU was ranked No. 3 among U.S. public universities that are 50 years old or younger by Times Higher Education (THE). The worldwide rankings include 414 of the world’s best universities and are based on the same performance indicators as THE World University Rankings, such as teaching, research, international outlook, and their work with industry. FIU also placed in the top 50 in the world in four categories in THE Impact Rankings, which assesses universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
FIU was selected as one of nine higher education institutions across the nation—and the only one in Florida—to receive the first-ever Seal of Excelencia by Excelencia in Education. The nation’s leading organization for accelerating Latino student success, Excelencia in Education created the seal to recognize higher education institutions that employ evidence-based practices, maintain strong data systems, and have leadership committed to serving the needs of Latino students.
The FIU football program made history on November 23, 2019, when our Panthers defeated the crosstown rival UM Hurricanes by a score of 30-24 at Marlins Park. FIU led UM from start to finish, and the win secured FIU’s third-straight bowl berth, a school record.
